The Olympic Opening Ceremony

We were very excited about the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

The girls and I set the alarm to get up at 5.30am to watch it. It was very cold and dark when we crept downstairs. We put the heater on high, grabbed a bunch of blankets and fought over the dog because we all wanted the extra warmth that comes from the fur ball.

It was very exciting.

And then it wasn't.

Some observations,

1. The Queen would look better if she smiled more
2. My husband does look like Daniel Craig and I wish he would wear a tuxedo more often
3. A lot of the dancing seemed to be in the dark. Bruce Springsteen would have loved it.
4. I think the whole love story, texting thing was silly. This is the Olympics not high school
5. Where was Lily Allen? She should have sung "Smile" to the Queen
6. More importantly, where were Nanny McPhee and Basil Fawlty?
7. Three Cups of coffee didn't make it better
8. David Beckham is very good at pretending to drive a boat
9. I like drums
10. Athletes shouldn't chew gum when walking into the stadium
11. It would have been better in double time.

I kinda wish I had stayed in bed and just read about it on twitter because everything is more interesting on twitter.

  1. As an Australian living in the UK for the past year, we (especially my 3 year old) has become a little obsessed with the Queen, so we LOVED when she 'fell out of the helicopter'. Sadly that was the highlight of the night, the rest was average at best, especially the 15 mins dedicated to the national health service?? hello?? At least we didn't have to get up at silly o'clock to watch it :-)

    1. It really was silly o'clock :) That really was the best part. I had a hard time convincing my girls that she didn't really jump out of a helicopter. Thanks for commenting. Rx

  2. I tried to watch some clips of it on youtube but kept getting the notice that the IOC had pulled copyright and I should bugger off. Apparently I should wait for the dvd? Meh, I don't care enough about it to do that.

    1. I wouldn't care enough either. The IOC has gone a little crazy.

  3. I actually only switched it on in time for that love story thing, and wondered what on earth was going on!! Then the whole thing appeared to turn into a rave...?! the poor queen probably thought she'd stumbled into one of Prince Harry's parties ;)

    1. Haha, yes but I think the Prince's parties would have been a little less G rated. Rx

  4. People have been raving about it, so I've been wondering what was so good. I saw a bit about the house party thing (in highlights) and wondered about the context....

  5. I missed it, but saw a quick snippet of Rowan Atkinson that made me laugh. Nothing else stood out. I do applaud the Queen for going along with a James Bond-esque theme!

    1. Those were the two best bits. My girls love Mr Bean, so they really loved that bit. Rachel x

  6. Oooh I loved the first 90 minutes. When the athletes started to enter the stadium, I kind of lost interest. The lighting of the cauldron was incredibly underwhelming...or perhaps I was just tired after getting up at 5:30! lol

    1. The first part was good but then I wanted to press fast forward and watch them compete instead. Rx

  7. OMG how funny - Lily Allen singing Smile to the Queen! That would have been gold! I did wonder about her grumpy face but we decided that she was a bit old to be jumping out of a helicopter. I did see Basil Fawlty's image on the house. The whole ceremony seemed to be a celebration of British TV, rather than sport, although Mr Bean was funny. Agree that the txting thing was silly.
Did you know that if you send a letter to the Queen one of her ladies in waiting will send a reply? True!

    1. I must have fallen asleep when Basil appeared. They could have cut out huge portions of it and improved it. Mr Bean was great - my girls love him.

I should write to her. Rx

  8. We loved it! We lived in London for a while, so a lot of the history was really real - we loved the industrial revolution thing and Rowan Atkinson was great. We had to watch ALL of the athlete's come into the stadium, Mr Cool insisted. Thankfully, we watched the replay at 2pm which was heavily edited!

We go at bit gar-gar about the Olympics, such a moment of humanity uniting - gushy, I know!

I agree with Kate above, the lighting of the cauldron was AMAZING!

I want to go back to LONDON! NOW!!

    1. The edited version was the one to watch. I probably would have loved it too after that version.

I have never been to London but would love to go. Now is a good time. :)
