5 Beauty mistakes and how to avoid them

There are a few beauty mistakes that drive me nuts and I am probably guilty of them all. I try to avoid committing these terrible crimes but sometimes, accidents happen.
Here are a list of crimes and how to minimise the damage:
  1. Lipstick on the teeth. This always happens when I apply red lipstick because of this I know to check the mirror after application. If you are still concerned then go for a lighter lipstick or gloss because isn't so obvious when smeared across your pearly whites.
  2. Over plucked eyebrows. I know it use to be fashionable to have thin or over-shaped brows.  Many, many years have passed since then. Why is there a new breed of over-plucked or mis-shaped brows? I don't trust myself, so I like to place my brows in the hands of a professional. This is a necessary expense. Also, invest in a eyebrow pencil or shadow to fill them in. Ask the professional to demonstrate the most natural technique.
  3. The dreaded foundation line. It is worse when the face is orange and the neck is white but a line is still a line. Blend, blend, blend. Also, your skin changes colour through out the year. Your summer foundation won't be the same as your winter one. Have your foundation matched regularly.
  4. Clumpy Mascara. Replace your mascara often. When mascara gets old, it gets thicker and more likely to clump. After applying the mascara, brush through with a clean mascara wand to separate the lashes. If you don't have a mascara wand, use your husband's toothbrush but clean it before you put it back. The black marks will give it away.
  5. Dark lipliner. Lipliner should never be obvious. I use it when I wear my red lipstick because I need all the help I can get to keep my lipstick where it should be. To avoid the obvious line, I outline my lips and then colour them in with the lipliner before applying lipstick. When I use a lighter lipstick or gloss I just avoid it all together.

If you see me out and about with unblended concealer, a foundation line or lipstick on my teeth, it's obviously just another day in my imperfect world. I would much prefer you to tell me than to worry it might embarrass me.

What are your biggest makeup mistakes? Or even better, dob in a friend. This is a safe zone and they will never know.

  1. Awesome - you've really put yourself through it in order to bring us evidence of these makeup crimes!

Under eye highlighters are fabulous but you have to be really careful to make sure they're blended in. Does look a bit odd sometimes.

I've grown my eyebrows back, apart from a few gaps here and there. I use a combination of BECCA brow powder, MAC brow pencil and a Stila felt tip pen-thingummy to fill them in. My makeup crime is forgetting to do this and it just looks weird!

  2. Yes, the highlighter under the eyes can look worse than the dark circles. At least one of them is natural. The Stila pen sounds great! Rachel x

  4. My Miss 15 was a clumpy mascara culprit. Used to drive me insane, looking like a couple of spiders mating on her eyelashes! She is much better with it now. Maybe I should go check my toothbrush! haha :)

  5. I experience the dark liner syndrome sometimes. Not because my eyeliner is dark. It's just that when my lippy fades, the outline doesnt

  6. I am glad you don't live closer to me! I think you may be embarrassed to be seen with me!

I have deep set eyes and often my eyeliner and mascara rubs off up into my eyebrows - terrible look! It is better when I haven't been using eye-cream - but then, I get dry skin around my eyes. I have taken to blotting my eyemake-up with a nude coloured eyeshadow, this works, but... I am often the last to get ready so am ALWAYS rushed!

    Le Sigh....

  8. My lipstick "bleeds"...not just now adays because I am "of a certain age"...it always has...always will. How i discovered this is I worked in cosmetic sales in the 80's...and there was the most amazing Helena Rubenstien Mulberry lip gloss just arrived. I was relieving the girl on "Mens Fragrance" for her lunch hour and coated up lavishly with this delicious wet rich glam look...anything to improve your chances while serving the hot guys in the lunch hour..and sailed off to "man" the counter...we all vied for this gig as the men that wore aftershave in the 80's were hot property. I was serving a particularily gorgeous prospect and pouting away to my inner godesses hearts' content.....I thought he must be "gay" as he was totally unresponsive to my mewing and grinning...in fact...he seemed a tad weirded out by my come hither attempts. I went back to my area after the hour and was advised to look in the mirror by a colleague (as if we needed encouragement on the cosmetics floor!) Shock horror!!! The rich deep sensuous mulberry had oozed from my lips to my nose..and ended in an aura of a variety of pink hues. Poor guy must have thought I had eaten a beetroot burger behind the counter.

  10. I really love your dedication to bringing us the evidence :) That lipstick-on-teeth pic is gold!

I'm a serial offender of not replacing my mascara often enough. My sister always jokes about it but I now put a note in my phone to remind me when I buy one and when one is due for replacement.

    1. I use to think Mascara lasted forever. I blame this on my mother.
