Eyebrows: Wax, pluck, thread or ignore?

I have long been a waxing girl. I get my eyebrows waxed every couple of months and pluck out the strays with tweezers in between. Sometimes I might even grow them out for a few months to give my eyebrow artist something to work with. I prefer my brows not to look overdone but a natural, neaten version of their natural state.
I am a wee bit obsessed with eyebrows and I have seen some shocking brows lately. These have totally convinced me that I am on the right track. Overdone brows can make a person look dated and older. If in doubt, just neaten and comb into place. In the long run, the thicker (and maintained) your brows, the younger you look. I am not blessed with thick but I work hard with what I have.

Recently, I decided to give threading a go. I understood threading was good to pick up fine hairs and accuracy. What I didn't know is that it would feel like a little, rusty, razor blade, tap dancing across my brows. It hurt a lot! My eyes watered and I was pulling ugly faces.

So, threading does give a nice affect but the pain is greater than waxing or plucking. My advice, take a friend and don't let her know about the pain. Be prepared, brace yourself, hold in the ugly face and then have a good laugh at her expense. It'll make you feel so much better.

PS: Men, trim the length of the eyebrow hairs and maybe subtle between the brow work. If you are worried about stray hairs, then focus on ears, back of neck and nasal hairs. Maintaining these will have a greater affect.

  1. I've always wanted to try threading, now I'm not sure if I should! ;p

  2. I've wondered about threading! I have a good basic shape but these days they need hardcore tidying up. And I do get plenty of rogue long sticky out ones, John Howard style. What is with that!?!? Now don't get me started about my chin hairs...

  3. My sister said I was a big sook because I though threading was unbearable! Glad to know I'm not alone. Waxing is fine, and I've gradually built up my tolerance and plucking is fine now too. I'm with you - I've developed a bit of a brow obsession and wrote a post about it not long ago (including before & after shots!) - http://redlandcityliving.com/its-all-about-the-brows/

  4. I gave threading a go and I actually like it more than waxing and find it less painful.

  5. I'm a plucker. I have had them waxed on ocassion, if I am at a salon, or there's a deal that includes an eyebrow wax, but typically I just pluck. I'd like to grow them out for a while and then get them shaped a bit better, but the strays drive me INSANE in between! x Aroha

  6. I usually pluck my eyebrows (haven't had them waxed before), but when a threading place popped up near me I was tempted to give it a go. Not so much any more lol.

  7. I've never tried threading either. I have friends who rave about it (some place in Chermside...) I like a nice, quick wax job where the watering eyes only last a few seconds!

  8. I wish I had the patience to grow mine out and start again but I massacre them! I think it's about time I gave them a rest though. Wish me luck! xx

  9. Waxing for me ..... whenever I remember or my brow gets too heavy from all the overgrown hairs. I was keen on trying threading, but I think you may have just scared me off a little x

  10. I'm a three times a year waxer with a pluck in between. I don't touch them at all in the month before the wax - I like to stick as close to the natural shape as possible. But tidier, of course!

I've had over-thin brows before (despite strict instructions to the waxer in question) and totally agree - thick but nicely shaped is way better and more flattering on EVERYONE than brows that look as though they've been drawn on in pencil.

  11. I'm pretty lucky in the eyebrow department - like you I'm wary of overplucking so I just neaten up the strays. What I am keen to try is one of those "brow bars" that are specifically just for eyebrows! There used to be one in the Myer Centre in town and I know theres one call "Brow-zing" in Bulimba not far from where I live.

Maybe you could give one a go and let us know your professional opinion on your blog ;)

    1. I am totally obsessed with eyebrows and there is no better place than the Brow bar. Its exxie but worth it. I go to the one at New Farm and the girls who work there all have the most beautiful brows you've ever seen.

  12. Nothing worse than looking like Bert - haven't tried threading. Waxing will do for now :)

  13. I passed a woman at the pool yesterday and her brows were so great I considered stopping and telling her. I'd love great brows but I'm afraid I over plucked in the 80s. I second your recommendation against this.

  14. My boyfriend is more worried about his stray hairs than I am! haha. He is always in the mirror, plucking and trimming all over the place. I go to the salon for an eyebrow wax when I can, but sometimes money is tight and I just leave my brows alone. They really aren't that bad, anyway. You can barely notice when I have had it done!

  15. I get them waxed every few weeks and pluck in between. Not too sure if I would try threading, waxing is bad enough!

  16. I like plucking. I just do it myself every couple of days. If I've got a big fancy night out I might go get them waxed. I actually really like the hot wax feeling.
I never really knew what threading was before until a friend told me. She said it was really painful. So I think I will take both your opinions and stick to my plucking and waxing!

  17. I love having my eyebrows waxed and my eyelashes tinted. Goodness, it's been a while. Have seen a but of hype surrounding threading.. not sure it's my cup of tea. Thanks for the heads up :)

  18. I still don't understand what threading is. I think I'll stick with the trusty old wax. Loving your eyebrows x

  19. I've worked hard to get my eyebrows back to normal after over plucking in the early 2000s.
I think threading, by an expert, gives an amazing finish.

  20. I have never done anything to my eyebrows at all. It has just never occurred to me to touch them!

  21. I LOVE THREADING!! I started getting it done a couple of years ago and it is awesome. Yes, it can hurt, I found it less painful than plucking though. But the results are awesome, I am always so stoked when I walk out after the 5 minutes it takes them, I can't stop staring at my eyebrows! x Karen

  22. Whoa!!!! I have to wax every 2 weeks - I use to pluck and then got lazy now I like my 5 minutes $10 wax :) I tried threading once.. felt like it was a little electric static going on and on and on.. nuhuh! not for me.. waxing over and done quick and simple..

btw.. you look totally FABALICIOUS for 40 hun!! I am jealous and I'm only 32.. I need your secrets.. I need your fashion advice.. actually I do.. I will msg u :P

  23. I'll fess up to once upon a time being a lazy nail scissor girl but realised that wasn't going to cut it (hahaha pardon the pun) forever and have been a 6weekly waxer for ages now. I book in to get the roots done, legs and brows waxed plus toenails painted all in one go because if I was left to my own devices they'd shockers.
Totally agree that less is not best!
    PS. Nice arch xx

  24. Oh Rach - if threading hurts like that, the threader is doing it wrong! I've only had threading past 2 years - same with my teenage daughter.

  25. I love threading!! Since moving to the Middle East it is all I can get done locally. I now go fortnightly (it costs approx $3.5 Aus) and don't need to pluck in-between. My lady is fab and so critical of my thin eyebrows she forced me to grow them and now almost two years later I am impressed with the result.

The pain gets easier, the first time I think the pain is based on the horrible noise.

  26. OWWW! I think that threading sounds awful. I usually pluck, but I have lost my tweezers so mine are in serious need of work!! Maybe I better get that on the to do list for today :)

  27. When I first met my husband he had this huge blonde stray hair sticking out of his eyebrow. It was hilarious. I kept wanting to get my tweezers out of my make up bag and just pluck those suckers right out!
What is threading? Hadn't even heard of it!
Sounds too painful for me though.
I want your eyebrows (but not in a weird stalker kind of way :))

  28. I have often wondered about threading (I am a waxing girl) - but after this I don't think I will be trying it out anytime soon !!!!
Have a great weekend - hope the weather is good to you !
