The day I almost found a grey hair!!

I am pretty lucky. I'll be 40 years old in February and I am quite proud of the fact I don't have any grey hairs or any fillings in my teeth. In fact, I might even be a little cocky about it.

Then my dear hairdresser pointed out that I did in fact have some. I doubted her and when I got home I went immediately to the mirror and started digging around. At first I thought it was a reflection of light on my shiny, shiny hair. Then I looked harder and I realised something was there. On closer inspection I came to the conclusion that it's probably a rare albino hair, I noticed a few other rare albino hairs too.

I am glad I got to the bottom of it, because when I thought it was grey. It really knocked my confidence and made me doubt myself. I don't know why but it did.

I still don't have any fillings. I will stay quietly cocky about this too.

Have you had any grey hairs yet? How did you feel?

Hair Trends for Spring 2012

It's that time again. The weather is going to start warming up and we are going to shed our winter layers and want to do something (anything) to freshen up our look.

Some huge hair trends for Spring 2012 are:
1. Short, short, short. I have already jumped on this bandwagon and feel free to join me. It's great getting the heavy hair off your neck and it's so easy and quick to style.
Think Anne Hathaway, Evan Rachel Wood, Ginnifer Goodwin, Miley Cyrus

2. Colour. Bright playful colours are still huge.  Any colour and don't think it's just for rocks stars. This is a good friend of mine and she is rockin' a rainbow of gorgeous colours.
Think P!nkKelly Osbourne
3. What I like to call the undone do. The dramatic Balayage is going and being replaced with a more natural look. I am relieved, I am over it. The new version doesn't look like regrowth, it looks like summer visited and the kissed the ends of your hair. Then you have to make it look like it dried naturally into a perfect rolled-out-of-bed do.
Think Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson
4. The fringe. This is a quick way to have a dramatic change. It's also awesome when you can't afford botox. It'll hide forehead wrinkles.
Think Jessica Biel, Zooey Deschanel
5. Short bobs. This still remains one of the most popular hair styles. This time it's shorter with movement.
Think Carmeron Diaz

AND Looks to Avoid
Kim Kardashian Playboy hair extensions and waves.
Extreme balayage
over the top wigs like Nicki Minaj

5 Tips to make sure you are happy with your hair when you leave the salon

Every girl must have a great hairdresser that you can trust and that listens to you. A hairdresser that is honest with you about what you can achieve with the hair you have been cursed blessed with.
I luckier now with my current hairdresser but over the years I have had some hair shockers. I still have nightmares about my undercut, the wedge and the Mrs Brady layered do. I think the majority of my hair shockers were caused by a combination of:
  • My stupid inspiration choices
  • Hairdressers lack of skill
  • Our bad communication
  • Hairdresser cockiness. I am so great, me, me, me, snip snip snip and "oh...a masterpiece"
  • My unrealistic expectations
Here are five tips to ensure you are happier when you leave the salon:
  1. Bring in photos of your inspiration and try to include a back of head photos (this is always a little harder but very helpful). If you can't find a photo, then take a photo of someone you see when you are out and about. I find that people are usually happy for you to take a snap and are flattered you like their hair so much.
  2. Be honest with yourself about how much time and money you are going to put into maintaining your cut and colour. Blonde can look amazing but are you really going to do your re-growth every 4 weeks? I am poor and lazy, therefore I need a low maintenance do.
  3. Ask your hairdresser if this would work with your hair and lifestyle.
  4. Keep in mind how much time you have in the morning to achieve your new do.
  5. Make you you have the right products for your hair. If you have the right products you will be able to maintain the cut and colour for longer between cuts.
I have always felt I was boring and stuck in a rut with my hair. Then I looked over the last year. I wonder what I should do next?
What is the worst hair do you have had?

It's no secret that I love my hairdresser. I have been seeing her for a few years, before I started blogging and before they were sponsors and advertisers on Redcliffe Style. My high opinion of them hasn't been bought but has been careful nurtured.

Light v. Dark

On the spur of the moment I dropped into Beautiful You at Margate.  I have enjoyed my blonde hair and I never thought I would be able to go this light. Did I have more fun? No, because I always have fun. It was time to embrace my dark side again. Boy, I have missed my shiny dark hair.

I am thrilled to be able to break out all my red lippies again. I wonder if my husband will notice?

Makeover...

I have been bored with my look and so sick of looking at my face and hair in the mirror. So, when Beautiful You asked if I would be interested in participating in a Redken hair show I jumped at the chance.

Toni and I discussed hair cuts, suggestions were passed back and forth and then we both agreed on the same cut. Hair colour we had no idea. I decided to let her do whatever she liked. She asked if she could put a surprise colour in with the foils I said yes and I didn't even want to know what it was. That is how we roll!

Once my hair was washed, I discovered that I had pinky-red highlights, mixed into the blondy foils.  I love it.

Here is my photo journal of the makeover.

Tip and Tricks - Hair

Now that we are back into the school runs, we have to remember how to get ourselves presentable in the five minutes we have left after making the lunches, ironing the school uniforms (not me, but I understand some awesome mums do this), wrangling children, taming pig tails and brushing teeth etc. I have previously written Tip and Tricks for trying to look presentable for the school run.  But, this time I have called in the big guns to give us some tips for doing our hair quickly.  Toni Hilton from Beautiful You in Margate was kind enough to let me pick her brain.
Important tools that everyone should have:
  • Tail comb
  • bobby pins
  • hair bands
  • head bands
  • hair straightener
  • dressing brush
Great Products you could use:
  • Beach spray
  • Aerate product
  • Root lifting products
  • memory products
  • Dry shampoo
  • hair spray (not lacquer, you still want it to look like hair and not a helmet)
SHORT
The key to styling short hair is the cut and with no-fuss and minimal products.  With the right hair cut you can wash and blow dry in minutes and walk away looking fabulous.

Look One
The messy volume look
Apply a volumising product, we used Redken Aerate 08 bodyfing cream-mousse. Rub a small amount onto your hands and massage into roots then through to the ends. Use your blowdryer to dry the hair upwards, then forwards and around the sides, all the time using your fingers to lift the hair up from the roots.  Depending on your part, over exaggerate the direction of the part so it sits a little flatter across the forehead. For even more volume throw your head over and blow dry hair up first. Use a little more of the original product as a finishing wax to move the hair into place. Remember don't spend too much time on your hair, the more your fiddle the more unhappy you are with it.
Look Two
Up and at 'em hair inspired by Ruby Rose
This is my favourite, but I was unable to get any good photos of it. Very disappointing I know. If you don't know Ruby Rose, here is a photo of her. We didn't do her hair or take her photo or even meet her, but if she did come into the salon, this is what we would do to recreate this look.
Apply root lifting product to the roots, we would use Redken Rootful.

Again use your fingers and mostly blow dry your hair upwards (throwing your hair over again works well) use a small brush or vent brush through the top to get extra lift.  You can go a little crazy and tease the top a little. To finish it off you need a shiny light weight wax, we would use Redken Structure wax.  apply to finger tips and slide through the sides to flatten slightly, you can even tuck behind the ears if it's long enough then using your fingers lift the top middle and crown up.
Ruby would look like this when she looks in the mirror, amazed that it was so quick to achieve something that looks this awesome.  No worries, Ruby.

MEDIUM
Most medium length hair seems to be in a bob style. weather blunt or choppy and layered this is such a versatile length.

Look One
Front side braid with a messy back bun
If you have a hair straightener and suffer from hairline fluffys, take 60 seconds to just smooth the front you will be glad when your braid is smoother. Then part the hair on the side and make a braid about 1-2 inches thick, depending in the thickness of your hairline, the finer the hair, the thicker the braid, once the braid has reached the ear, use a thin elastic band to hold into place.  Through the back of your hair, add some seasalt spray, we use Redken Natures Rescue radiant sea salt spray, using your dryer and fingers spend 2 minutes scrunching and messing it up.  Loosly grab the hair including the braid and use a thin hair tie and start to pony tail the hair, on the last loop only half pull the hair through.  Lastly, pull at the pony tail to tighten and to mess it up a little. Use bobby pins to secure any bits that might need more controlling.  Light spritz of hair spray and you are good to go.
Look Two
This one is so easy....again you can you a straightener to smooth the front section.  Take sections from the top and tease the roots until you get to the the crown, gently smooth over with a dressing brush, grab your favourite headband and put on while pushing the front of your hair flat, you should now have a little beehive. Using your dressing brush pull the hair into a pony tail but careful not to flatten the hair behind the headband. Grab a small piece of hair from the underside of the pony tail, wrap it around the pony tail, hiding the hairband and secure underneath using a bobby pin.
You can make the beehive higher than this photo or do a bun instead of a pony tail.

LONG HAIR
Look One
Gorgeous beachy waves
Another easy one...you can either sleep in the plaits or use a hair straightener. If you are sleeping in the plaits, dampen the hair with salt spray before plaiting. Instead of sleeping in the plaits we used Redken Spray starch memory spray all over the hair and divide the hair into 8 sections, if your hair is thicker you will need more sections.  Loosely plait each section. You then use your hair straightener to pinch the plaits. The heat combined with the memory spray with help to keep the waves. When you have completed pinching all the plaits, let them cool down, then remove the hair ties. Loosely shake out the plaits and be careful not to handle the hair too much. You can leave like this or add a headband or clip.
Look Two
Messy side bun
We did this after creating the first look. You can do this with or without the waves.  Both are easy and look great.

First create a side part, and then grab all the hair for a low messy bun on the opposite side to the part. The trick is not to try too hard to make it perfect or handle it too much.  Twist the hair around itself until it looks like a bun then wrap your hair band around it. Using bobby pins, secure any bits that are too loose or falling out. A little falling out looks nice. Follow with a light spritzing of hair spray.
These hair styles really only took minutes to achieve.  I have been trying them out this week.  Thank you Toni for your time and suggestions.

PS: My husband was looking over my shoulder and is begging me to get the Ruby Rose cut and colour. I love it, I wonder if I'll be brave enough.

Exciting Plans...

School has returned in Queensland and now the rush is on to get out of the house in the morning again.  To make it even worse, it has been raining non-stop for the entire first week.  My hair is fine, frizzy and limp, these are all really attractive together.
So I have been talking with my good friend, Toni Hilton.  Toni owns Beautiful You in Margate and is also the main carer of my hair.  Toni has kindly agreed to help put together some articles for Quick Tips and Tricks for your Hair.  We hope to give you some nice and quick suggestions on what you can do to your hair with limited time.  We will do a few articles focusing on short, medium and long styles.  Toni has some great suggestions and I can't wait to share them with you.
