Hair: Lightening up for Summer

I have been putting off my regrowth issues for a while. I knew it was time to do something with my hair but I wasn't sure what. I think that if you are unsure, then don't do anything. But, there was a fake grey that reappeared and forced my hand. With summer coming I decided it was time to lighten up a little. I settled on light brown with blonde highlights. It's quite a procedure to lighten hair that is dyed dark.

1. Strip the colour. This product is only applied to the dyed portion of the hair. The virgin roots (haha) are avoided
2. When this is rinsed out, you maybe left with strange, orange coloured hair. That's okay
3. Foils galore, focusing mainly on the front and top
4. Apply the colour over the rest of the unfoiled hair. My hairdresser uses Redken Chromatics. I would highly recommend it. They have zero ammonia and leave your hair gorgeous and shiny.
5. Rinse, style and admire how smart you were for making the change.
6. Your hair will require the correct home maintenance products to ensure your hair colour and condition is the best it can be. Ask your hair dresser for recommendations but I love the Redken Colour extend range for shampoo and conditioner and Extreme strength builder as a weekly (or bi-weekly) mask.
I am loving the new lighter, bronde (that's what my girls are calling it). Now I just want it to be long enough to braid, twist or knot for summer. This might be a little harder to achieve.

Do you change your hair with the seasons?

  6. I am regretting a home dye job that has made me almost blackkkkkk...eeeek!! Mydaughter a hairdresser and I am going to have to crawl to her and beg on bended knee to have it look lees BLACK and more like natural hair. Yours has come up beautifully..I am scared about sacrifcing the condition if I have the colour removed....lesson learned. :-(

    1. Oh no, that has happened to me before. It does affect the colour to remove. Good luck!

  7. Love the new colour Rachel! I have been a very light blonde for a long time and recently got sick of the upkeep, also being in constant summer here in the Middle East my roots are actually quite fair.
Last hairdresser visit I opted for an ombre look and had a darker brown applied to my roots and about two inches lower and the rest left blonde. I love it and have not had to go back for two months to get my roots done as they now blend into the new colour.

    1. That would look great. It good that you found a colour that's easy to maintain. My hair is too short for that.

  8. Very nice colour, it really looks great. I used to do the dark for winter light for summer but I just don't do it anymore for some unknown reason. I have worked out of the years it's best for everyone including my silvers that I should keep it long for tying up and blonde for hiding my impending silver makeover.

    1. Blonde does hide silver well. Dark brown does not. Rx

  9. Oh, I really like it. You look gorgeous in whatever colour you choose, and I never really get the point of changing hair colour for seasons (mainly because I'm the same colour the entire year around!) until I saw this. Love the dark chocolate on you but the bronde is fabulous! Your eye colour looks completely different! x

  15. I like it on you. I am low maintenance by default, I rarely have the time to properly dye my hair, I often grab the nearest Aldi colour and just use it, when I can get the time... Really must get round to it again!

    1. I am usually low maintenance too but I was really ready for a change. I didn't even know Aldi did colour. They do everything!
