How I pick my Melbourne Cup horse

I am not a gambler but I do love a flutter on Melbourne Cup day. Over the years I have streamlined my technique for picking my horse. I have studied trainers, jockeys, handicaps, horses winning history and I have found the one thing that works for me.

I pick the horse that has the best name to yell out. This year, without a doubt, the best name is 'Zabeelionaire". I have been walking around for a couple of days practising. The best way to yell this is to pretend you are Dr Evil.
Seriously, no other horse name comes close.

I'll have to eat Chicken Tikka Masalsa and drink wine from Brokenwood Cricket Pitch at the same time because they are fun to say too.

How do you pick your horse?

On Tuesdays I link up with IBOT at Essentially Jess

  1. omg that name is hilarious!

I used to 'dabble' in the cup, but now it's all too hard!

I won't even get to watch it this year. Tuesdays are the bane of my existence at the moment.

    1. I have only just realised you can bet online. I am not that organised though.

  2. Love your theory! I tend to gravitate towards names, too. I get an instant feeling when I see a name and I just have to go for it - win or lose. This year I'm putting a bet on Maluckyday because I want it to be MY lucky day!

  3. We did a "family sweep" this morning. Cut all of the numbers out. Picked out of MOTH's hat. Little Misses didn't want to waste a number so we have 6 horses each...... go figure
Miss 9 is aching to go to the local picnic races today but the forecast gale force winds have me thinking otherwise.

    1. It turns out that it's not the best way to pick a winner, but it's still the most fun :)

  5. I ALWAYS forget Melbourne Cup! It just doesn't really blip my radar...

One year my sister put on a fancy lunch, after lunch, my baby fell asleep so I popped out to the camping store to buy a tent.... I realised my gross rudeness when they had the race on in the camping store and I had to slink back to my sister's house and apologise... Silly ME!

I think the yelling out thing is a great strategy...

  7. Ha ha!
I'll be honest and say I never pick a horse, or watch it cause I really don't care. But I kinda wanna yell out Zebillionaire just for the fun of it!

  8. I can just hear it now, "Gooooo, Zabeelionaaaaaare! Mwah, ha ha HA!!!"
While we're on strange names, my best friend's mother got a little merry before dinner at an Indian restaurant once. When it came to ordering, she asked the waiter for some "Chicken Tickle My Ass"...;)

  9. Hahaha! I just can't stop laughing! I wonder where they find these strange names for horses?

  10. I just did not get time to do the Melbourne Cup today - had a bit of a tragic late, forgot everything, nearly got a parking ticket, forgot everything again kinda morning. But I did manage to do an office sweep and won $5. I'm counting that as a win!

I usually pick one of the top three every year. Not quite sure how. I always pick a horse by Frankie Dettori, even though he almost never wins!

  11. LOL... that's classic! I might just have to try your method next year. I didn't even pick this year until the last minute... didn't do any good, so lucky I didn't place an actual bet! :D

  13. Hahaha you're a hoot! I used to work at a TAB, so I like to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I read the form guide, see who's the trainer and the jockey, read a little about the history of the horse... then I pick a loser. So clearly I know nothing! xx

    1. I would have thought you would have a complicated and foolproof technique.

  14. I back the same numbers every year and being the big spender I am I back them for $1 to win and $1 to place

  15. I am a colours girl- whoever has the nicest shade of blue. Names are also a biggy for me - I like ones that have the right 'feeling' :) didn't help once today!
