I don't like tinsel

There I said it.

I really don't like it. In fact I dislike it so much that I have made my house a tinsel free zone this Christmas.

Would you like some reasons?

1. It's messy
2. It's last season
3. It lacks imagination
4. It's itchy when you wear it as a scarf.
5. Little pieces can still be found weeks after Santa has left the building.

It's such a weight off my shoulders to be able to say it. I hate tinsel!
Is there anything you don't like in Christmas decorations? This is a judgement free zone.

  1. Oh, I can't stand tinsel either! But the kids love it, so I allow it with conditions: that we only have silver tinsel and we don't go overboard with it. I am scarred by memories of my parents Christmas tree as a child - mum would decorate with tinsel of every colour and it looked hideous. Thankfully my M-I-L introduced me to using ribbon as a nice alternative.

    1. Ribbon is a great idea. I hadn't even thought of that. Thanks Deb x

  2. I like all decorations but prefer Halloween ones to Christmas. We have a lot of xmas decorations but nothing compared to the Halloween ones, that fly, flash, shriek and do stuff...

    1. Halloween ones are fun because they have a sense of humour. I like them too. Rx

  3. Oooh, I really like Debbie's idea - using ribbon instead. It's never messy, can be rolled around the tree just beautifully & thick ribbon can fill in the gaps like tinsel does. I might do that this year! Thanks for the inspiration there, Donna x

  4. I'm the same, I don't like tinsel either, especially if its from a few years, it gets really dusty :(

    1. It's even worse dusty. It loses it's shine which was the only thing it had going for it.

  5. Little bits of tinsel every where.... eeerrrmaagerrrhd!! lol. I might just enforce a ban too. Good thinkin' ;-)

  6. Tinsel is banned in my house too! It sends my OCD into overdrive! So I got a silver Christmas tree so the kids have never noticed we don't have tinsel!

  7. Tinsel is okay. It's the gazillions of little green needle/leaves from the (fake) Christmas tree that I find all year round that drive me bonkers!!!

  8. I'm a bit funny about it. My mum's one of those people who accumulates christmas decorations. She visits the cheap stores each January (well, and October, November and December) and buys up. As a result she goes overboard.

I've tried to limit my decorations (given I don't have kids) so only buy the expensive really thick tinsel if I have any - and usually just a strand or two. I don't even have a tree, just some tasteful silver stuff to place about... Bah humbug!

    1. Haha, I didn't have a tree until I had children either. It was kind of pointless.

  10. To be honest, I dont like Christmas decorations all together. From bringing them out every year and putting them back.

Ever since I moved out, I havent bought any decoration except for one miniature christmas tree that you can put over a desk.

I have gorgeous lush DJ's 1980's matt gold tinsel - I know! They don't make it like that anymore - It's thick like a foxes tail. I treasure it so much that it even has its own storage box. I therefore can quite understand your dislike of the cheap nasty shedding imitations that now on mass masquerade as tinsel. I am also not a fan of all these el cheapo tree ornaments and as I like to laugh a lot I tend to favour Patience Brewster's Christmas Krinkles because I like things with shoes. Call me a decoration snob - I'm ok with it!

  13. I hate tinsel too, because I don't want my house to look like a butchers shop window. I love Christmas decorations, although I dislike fake Christmas trees. I have a very special hatred of anything cheesy that sings and/or dances.

    1. I hate the cheesy singing and dancing. Would a mistletoe with a french accent with sleazy sayings be ok?

  15. I agree with Annaleis - the tinsel I can handle its the fake Christmas tree and its shredding that drives me crazy.

    1. I don't like them either but I haven't got an alternative yet. After a few weeks of searching pinterest, I got lazy and pulled out the old one. Maybe next year.

  16. Seeing as we're getting stuff off our chests, I can't stand the glitter that falls off the Christmas baubles!! I like the look but the shiny crap all over my floors that somehow ends up in my childrens' eyebrows and scalps gives me the absolute shits.

Phew, that does feel better doesn't it!! xx

  17. OMG I hate tinsel! But even more than that I hate fake snow. I do not what drives some people to spray that can crap on their tree or use fluffy white material to make snow around the bottom of their tree, ick!

    1. Fake snow is terrible. But I always use it Christmas night to prove the Santa uses our toilet every year :)

  18. I don't like tinsel either...

    I also don't like Santa. There are very very few Santas in this house. I am a bit of a stickler and the old man really has nothing to do with Christmas. There I said it. Let the ostracising begin! {I hope not!!}

  20. I don't do Christmas decorations at all - especially now K is all grown up. I feel a bit like a grinch but honestly, the schlep of putting the tree and decorations up and then having to take them all down again - jusst can't be bothered. Maybe if we ever have grandchildren - things might be different but until then - happy to see the decorations in the shops !!!
    Have the best week !
