The dreaded play date....

I have noticed when my gorgeous 8 year old comes home from a play date or sleepover she is a little nightmare. Gone is the even-tempered, sweet, mummy-loving, angel and in it's place is a rude, bad tempered, sooky, little nutter.

Why????

My theory has two parts
  1. The other mum must be treating them special 'Are you okay sweetie', 'Do you need a drink?', 'What do you want to eat' etc etc. It's like visiting royalty
  2. The kid uses up all their goodness
Then they come home to me and they are treated like a normal 8yo again and I have to wait for their goodness to recharge.

What is your kid like when they return from a play date or sleep over?

  1. Yep, obnoxious and cranky ;O)
I'm not too keen to organise sleep overs and mostly just go for the play date through the day!

    1. I much prefer day plays and when I am around but I worry that I look overprotective. Rx

  2. Mine used to be like that. Until I started saying that if they are going to come home like monsters then they will not go on play dates anymore. It worked. It also helps that I let them have 30 minutes or so after they get home before asking how their day was. It gives them time to readjust to the boring world that is our home. LOL!

  3. Tell. Me. About. It. Rachel. Although mine are from sleepovers with their Dad. Always, always, always the first day back they are crazy and its not because they are getting away with anything. My two have never had a sleepover at a friend's place, only play dates in the park with me there. I kinda like those because they run themselves ragged and I get to talk to a grown up.

    1. That would be hard. Play dates with you around are so much better. Rx

  4. Lol... Mine's only 4 so I still have to experience her as an 8 year old monster!

Just wait until she becomes a little lady and the dreaded TTOM kicks in!

  5. Sleepovers are starting to wind down in my home. However when they do occur - a monster returns - I have always blamed it on the excess sugar I think/believe he fills himself on. Mix that with a late night and an early morning (as they always are up so early on sleepovers) and a monster is sent home.

    1. I hate that we can't control the sugar and diet when they are visiting. I really am a complete control freak :)

  6. My 8yo had her first sleepover this week and I was so scared for what/who would come home!!!! Thankfully, she brought the friend with her, so had to stay nice, and even after that she stayed good. I couldn't believe it.

Having said that, she slept until after eight this morning and we had to go in and check that she was breathing. Fingers crossed the next sleepover (whenever that is) will be equally successful!

  7. The two monkeys are on a two night sleepover at Nanny and Pop's this weekend, and they always come home being super appreciative of their mum! Must be so much fun there! Hahahaha!

  8. This sounds like the 'older' version of the grandparent syndrome had with Miss O since she was about one and a half whn we were still living in Australia.
Used to drive me up the wall.... now I would give anything for grandparents to be close enough for sleepovers even if it meant I have to put up with the hideous after effects.

  9. My kids come home sugar charged, tired and irritable... I do wonder if it is worth it sometimes!

    Sigh...

Your kids are still too cute though...
