Blogger Basics: Blogging on the Go

Do you ever have those moments when you are out-and-about and you have a flash of inspiration? The best idea for a blog post ever and you know that you can't possibly forget something so perfectly bloggable. Then by the time you get home and steal a few minutes to get in front of the monitor and it's gone. Not even a whisper of an idea left behind.

A way to avoid this forgetfulness is to blog-on-the-go.
Here are some tips for Blogging on the go:

1. You can be one of those highly organised people, use your Notebook or iPad, drop into your favourite bar cafe, order a glass of red coffee and ask for their free Wifi code and log on through your Notebook or iPad.

2. If you haven't already done so, work out how to tether/hotspot your iPad or Notebook to your phone. This way, if you can't find free Wifi you can still have access to the internet. I have found this extremely useful many times.
  • On the iPhone you can set up Hotspot by going into Settings, general, cellular and set up personal hotspot. This will create a hotspot password that you will need to use when logging in from your other devices. You can also change the password to something rememberable.
3. Download the Blogger or wordpress app for your phone. This won't be the easiest way to blog but it will give you the opportunity to get your thoughts down before they fly away.

4. Also, download the buffer and bitly apps. This will help you to stay organised when you are not organised.

There, now you have one less excuse why you can't blog regularly.

Thank you Mick Cullen from Redcliffe Marketing Labs for your topic suggestion.

  5. Thanks. I'm rather hopeless at technology, so this is great to know.

  6. I use the blogpress app (which can be used with blogger and wordpress) and draft posts as I think of them

  7. That sounds much more efficient than scribbling things in my diary. Thanks!

  8. I usually just open up my "notes" app and type in a few ideas/bits and pieces...if I remember to even do that! great tips. -Aroha

  9. I use the Wordpress app on my iPhone, but you can make some horrible errors with it and accidentally upload things and wipe out posts done before. Mind you, that error only occurs once or twice before you learn - the hard way, as ever.

The iPad is also good, with a wee keyboard. But sometimes I just tap a few words into my diary app ... not that I can always remember what I meant the post to be about though. Tethering to the phone's hotspot is a new one for me, it took far too long to work that out for me. No more 3G needed for iPad, so much cheaper.

  11. A great tip! Less likely to lose than a piece of paper.

  12. Ha! I have mentioned this exact same issue in my #IBOT post this week. Great minds obviously ;)
I use the Evernote app on my phone and I would be LOST without it. It's great for what I call "chook sctratchings" - key words and frangments of ideas that I can go back to when I sit down to write. I'm too scared to use the drafts folder on the Worpress app because my acrylic nails mean that my phone typing accuracy is crap! I'm sure I'd end up hitting publish on something random by accident.

  13. OK, buffer and bitly? I think you might need to do a post on those! I do still carry an old fashioned notepad and pen around with me to jot a few things down when inspiration strikes.

  14. You forgot the old fashioned notebook in your handbag. It's great just to jot the idea, and you can blog it when you have a mo.
I've been known to use Siri on my phone to make a note but the silly cow always misquotes me and my notes suddenly make no sense.....or is it just my brain????

  15. I haven't heard of those last two apps so I will be checking those out for sure!

  16. I am old school. Pen and paper. Hard to read my writing sometimes, but it's always there in my bag!

  17. The word press app is flippin awesome! Makes blogging so easy.
I don't usually blog when I'm out though. Otherwise I would never stop!

  18. I don't like the blogger app - but I do use the notes app to write any ideas I have down so I know where to return to when I need to. Love the hotspot - works a treat when we are away from home!

  19. I've got the others, now need to get the buffer and bitly apps. I love using the app Blogsy on my iPad, you can resize pictures and do more than the blogger app!!

  20. I quite often use the Wordpress app on my phone to start posts as I think of em, saving to drafts to go to later on the computer but like others in the comments I have not heard of buffer or bitly apps, may investigate!

  21. Clearly I have a lot to learn, because I didn't even understand some of that! hahahaha. xx

  22. I just take my pad and my pen everywhere I go and write down my ideas! When I get home, I write my post. I'm old fashion like that!

  23. I hate it when you are inspired at an inconvenient time - it always happens to me on my morning commute to work and unfortunately I don't think there's an app to help me with that! Kirsty @ My Home Truths

  24. I always forget that I have buffer and never use it. I keep a notebook for ideas and flesh them out when I can on the computer - I'm useless at using a phone or tablet for actual typing.

  25. I'm with the other Emily - I'm old school - pen and paper when my ideas are overflowing, which aren't often :)

  26. I am a little old school, I like the pen & paper but I tend to use "Notes" or text myself the ideas on my iPhone...I signed up for buffer too but haven't used it yet.Bit.ly i know about have yet to use..
