How to make Brussell Sprout taste good - Attempt 1

Brussell sprouts have had a pretty bad wrap.  I saw them in the fresh food section of Woollies, people avoiding eye contact with them, speeding up their trolley's to get past them.

Sitting left on the shelf, like reject little cabbages. I couldn't resist their silent challenge.

To make Brussell Sprouts taste good.
Remove outside leaves, chop stem and half.
Use a little olive oil (and a little butter), place them face down. Make sure you leave them for a while. You want them to cook through.
Flip and add lemon (I used lime because that's all I had) and
a little garlic, salt and pepper.
Toast some pine nuts.
Plate up with the pine nuts and sprinkled with parmesan.
Not bad, but they were still a little bitter. I think they might need to be par cooked a little beforehand. Maybe my second attempt will be better.

How do you cook them? Can they be delicious?

  1. My 8 year old is a strange one, he likes them.

He also likes to eat lemons whole, olives, frozen broad beans, brie cheese..

And does not like lollies or chocolate.

I peel them a bit, trim the end, cut them in half, dab on some butter and cook them senseless. That is so I can eat them too, he is not so fussed and eats them less processed.

  2. My mother-in-law tried a fancy brussell sprout recipe the other week & I still didn't like them. Nothing can mask that terrible taste from my childhood. I don't think they can be delicious, but I applaud you for trying :)

  3. I love this food challenge! I am not a brussel sprout fan at all, but I do recall a MasterChef episode where 2 super cool dudes from some super cool restaurant did brussel sprouts with pancetta...it looked good on TV!

    1. They would be good with a roast. Maybe I'll even try roasting them.

  8. I would try cooking them in a little vegetable stock...

    But your version looks great!

I happen to LOVE brussel sprouts, but Mr Cool does not. So I never cook them...

  10. I love brussel sprouts, always have. They have to be fresh, and I simply steam and then eat with a bit of lemon juice, salt and pepper. Your recipe sounds delicioso and I am going to give it a try this week :)

  11. I like them. My mum used to wash them, peel a few outer layers off, cut a cross into the stem - presumably to aid in cooking through - and then boiled them and when tender, served with salt, pepper and a little butter. I can imagine though that they are not everybody's cup of tea, but then I like Witlof or Endive which is on a similar scale of taste. I'll come around and eat them. Andrea

  13. I usually steam all my veggies but if I'm doing a lazy meal I throw everything together in a frying pan. I cut them the same way you did, then search my frige for some leftover marinade - I used a dab of sweet plum last time & it worked really well!
