My new obsession and a "Call the Midwife" giveaway worth $120

Call the Midwife is my new obsession. I had a big gaping whole left by Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. I was lost and empty, then I discovered this series.  It is amazing!

Call the Midwife is the highest rating drama series on BCC1 in the last 10 years and I can see why. Jenny Lee is the lead and she plays a new midwife. It's set in poverty stricken London's East end in the 1950s. It's so interesting to see how times have changed.

Glass enemas, pregnant ladies bawling, loopy cake stealing nun, and that is just the first episode.

My husband walked passed me watching it and made some sort of remark about 'obviously it's only for the ladies'. Get this....he didn't walk away and he couldn't stop watching it.

GIVE AWAY!!
Call the Midwife is released on DVD on 10 October RRP $39.95 and thanks to Roadshow Entertainment I have three sets to giveaway!! All you have to do to enter is:
  1. Leave a comment either here or on facebook telling me why you would like to win a copy of this series. The three most interesting comments will win.
  2. Enter prior to 6am on 16 October 2012.
If you would like to 'like' Redcliffe Style on Facebook that would be great but it's not an entry requirement.

Call the Midwife is available to own on DVD from 10 October 2012.
The second series is currently in production.

I have not received payment to review or host a giveaway. All opinions are my own.

  2. Oh this sounds like a series I NEED to watch!! I lurvvved downton abbey and lurvvvv all the one born every minute series...so this sounds like the absolute perfect emulsion of both! Imagine the torture I could reek on hubby with this one! Get him back for all the boring military/history shows he makes me watch!

  3. Ooh ooh pick me! Pick me! *jumps up and down* *waves arms around* I was so annoyed to miss this show but I realised it was on way too late, plus the husband is not such a fan of the period dramas. Boohoo. I would LOVE the DVD because I'm also not to fond of iView - watching on the computer is not the same. My Nan would love it too so it will be shared :)

  5. I'd love to give this series a go, sounds like a lot of fun. Since the traumatic birth of my eldest daughter I've avoided most shows featuring births, but I think within the context of a drama in a different time and place I would be ok with it. I certainly won't be able to personally relate to a glass enema ;)
    (thank goodness!)

  6. I love "One Born Every Minute", the BBC documentary filmed at a modern day maternity hospital. Maybe I'm a sap but I always shed a tear when the baby is born, the miracle of new life and all that! So it would be intriguing to watch "Call the Midwife" and see what it was like for previous generations. I know things have changed a lot over the years - I was born in the late 60's and my Dad was not even allowed to be with my Mum during her labour, which seems positively pre-historic to me!

  7. Ooh Rachel, we do shady dodgy downloading a our place and we've seen the first two eps of Downton Abbey... Just as good, worth the wait! My hubby and I are desperate for a new series - its our down time when the kids go to sleep. This sounds right up our alley: he's a pom, I'm fascinated by all things birth-related. Footprints Australia, my husband's dad only managed to be there by accident for one of his kids' births... Great Britain in the late 70s!

  8. I watched one recently where a crazy woman stole another lady's baby. As I have a small baby myself I went into massive empathy mode and bawled my eyes out (I tend to get too involved in things that are close to home). I keep missing it though so I would love to win a copy.

  9. Oh my goodness, this sounds amazing! I'd love to win a copy of this because I'm a huge fan of English television, and also because I'm a nurse with plans to become a midwife and I am just truly intrigued by how a 1950s midwife woulf function - not least about the glass enema!

  10. Perfect! I have been looking for more good viewing with my extra husband free time on my hands.

  11. Oh - this looks really great!
I would love to win this!
    1) I lived in London - even considered having a baby there - would love to see my old hometown...
    2) I always forget to watch tv, so I miss all my fav shows...
    3) DVDs mean no ads and I can stop for a tea break!
    4) The 50s were my favourite era - things seemed so simple - plus, I really think I should wear a corset, so I would fit right in!

  12. After living in the UK for 7 years.. I miss it terribly!!!
It looks like a great series I can sit with my mum and watch and actually spend some quality time with her (instead of just dumping the grandchildren with her for the afternoon!)

  13. My mum is a midwife and this series reminded me of all the stories she used to tell me of her training days. Something about a midwives job which makes it so interesting - maybe it is the sleep deprivation.

  14. Sounds interesting! They haven't started showing it in Singapore yet but I'd catch it if they did. Good luck to the participants!

  15. This is such a delightful series. I would love to own a copy and share it out to others who have missed it. Having had children makes me very thankful I'm not having it the way a lot of those ladies did.

  16. Oh gosh, the midwife that delivered my youngest baby was talking about this series while I was in labour lol. I remember trying to listen but being a little bit too busy to take it all in. I just remember saying to myself that I must watch the series at some point :)

  17. I saw a few ads for that and thought it looked pretty good. Then totally forgot about it due to dealing with a teething bubs who likes to eat tissues. I would love to win the DVD's as I pretty much do all of my Tv watching on DVD these days, for two reasons - 1. because you never know when the munchkin is going to wake up and then you miss half the show if watching live, even with Foxtel IQ!. And 2. I like to watch stuff with subtitles while the munchkin is in bed and I run on the treadmill. Having something decent to watch on DVD is about one of the only things that will actually get me moving! Ironic I know.

  18. I love Call The Midwife & I got my friend the books for her birthday present earlier on this year.

She loved them but said they were a little more graphic than the tv programme.

Hoping that the beeb will bring out another series soon!

  19. Because I absolute adore Chummy. If I had anymore babies (god forbid!) I would want Chummy to deliver them with her stiff upperlip matter of fact gentle soul manner. Also I could do with a bit of down time on the couch rewatching - there I've said it. Basically I'm lazy, like my feet up with a good cuppa tea and a jolly good english show on the tellie.

  20. Ooh, how exciting, this looks perfect to fill my Downton Abbey void. Just a thought, do you think my boss would notice a portable DVD player under my desk at work?

  21. I would love to win this DVD giveaway because I am a midwife in real life and I need a reminder why I am still on maternity leave ha ha...my husband and I found the "one born every minute tv show " hilarious. I am sorry to all the readers ( we don't laugh normally at everyone in labour pains) I have only seen bits and pieces of Call The Midwife. It would be great to catch up.

  22. I loved every minute of this show having been a huge fan of Downton Abbey and not knowing what to do with myself once it finished.
I was gripped by every episode of this series, such a well written script. Made me cry and laugh at different moments. My husband who was there for both our births took one look at the first show and left the room soon after.
I would love love love to win a copy to watch it all again!

  23. I found out about Downton Abbey 8 days ago and have already seen all the episodes... I need a new obsession.

This show sounds like it could be good... you had me at 'enemas'.

  24. The series brings back so many of the situations my mother (who was a midwife in the 50's) used to discuss with us regarding equality and the treatment of women and beside all that I really enjoy this series-its brilliant

  25. This show is so wonderful... it really shows how important Midwives are.... Brilliant!

  26. Gosh, life was hard and people were tough and it's not that long ago. I imagine those midwives and birthing mothers in the London tenements commenting on the 'birthing rooms'of today with "you call that labour??"

  27. I totally missed this on television but have heard nothing but raving reviews about it and also having found out that Miranda Hart stars in the show makes me want to see ti all the more.

  28. I have never seen this Series and with all the rave reviews that I have read both here and in other places, I am really missing out. So I really would love to see it!!!

  29. Being a 50s baby (very late 50s!) born in London at home which was a little flat above a jewellers next to a bank! It might give me an insight into what my mum went through.

  30. Wow! I didn't realise others had discovered this too! I am LOVING it! Unfortunately I didn't discover it on iView until about week 2, so didn't get to see the first one, so I would adore to win the dvd of it so that I could watch the beginning, and also I am sure that my mum would adore it, so it would be great to have the DVD so I could watch with her.
I love the episode with the woman who had triplets and delivered them by candelight and bike light - so good.

  31. I only saw the last episode of "Call the Midwife" and was enthralled. So sad I missed the earlier episodes. It was the kind of series that the Brits do best, charming, delightful and quirky. I did initially struggle with seeing Miranda Hart in a role that wasn't as "out there" the bumbling singleton in her show Miranda, but I loved her in this. She was still bumbling and awkward but in a way we could all easily sympathise with. I would love to win this and see the episodes I missed.

  32. What a Revelation! My Dad was born at the time it was set, in East End of London and I would like to see more and get a feel for how it was at the time-not to mention that it is a great and entertaining series!

I would love to watch this, when I watch ahows about poor people or people in a position worse off then me, it makes my life seem a bit easier. I even read the book The City Of Joy (about the slums of India), while I was hanging around the hospital doing all the waiting for my daughter to be born, my husband says I'm weird, that it would just make him depressed...

  34. I have never heard of this series, but would love something new to watch. I am tired of the current programs on tv, and usually just read a book or magazine in the evenings once the kids have gone to bed, but even that has been a fail since I recently read 50 Shades Of Grey thanks to a friends recommendation. So, I really need something DECENT to do with my time; I would really enjoy this. Many thanks for the opportunity.

  35. I've worked in Maternity, but I bet it was never like this. CALL THE MIDWIFE would be an eye opener that's for sure. I have heard that it's quite amazing.
