Lost in the Scarborough Area - Gym motivation

I am fairly active, I have always been a member of a gym. Currently it's Genesis at Rothwell. I really got out of my routine over the Christmas school holidays. It would have cost $8 each day to put my girls into the creche and my budget wouldn't cover it. Lucky I have my trusty Cardio Tech x9 treadmill. Most people are bored by treadmills, I understand but they should really try my technique, iPad2 on magazine rack to play Word with Friends (this does give me a slight handicap, but I manage to win enough games), the most awesome series ever "Boardwalk Empire" on Apple TV in front of me, nice and loud, and the air-conditioning cranked up. I am so distracted I forget I am running. I usually try to run 12-15km each session and I'll do this about 5 times a week.
Last week I ventured out to the gym for the first time on Friday to attend a Body Combat class (thank you Nat).  It was fantastic, the class was so much fun and I am ready to throw myself back into classes and weights, I can't run away forever (a little pun there). When I tried to get out of bed Saturday I felt like I had been ran over by a truck. I could barely walk up stairs. Sunday was even worse, I cried at the idea of going to the toilet. That'll teach me not to be a slacker.

On Wednesday I'll be joining into the spin class, I know there will be tears on Thursday.

  1. ah yes, I go through phases too. I 've been looking at the treadmill in our loungeroom recently thinking that it's getting cobwebs. motivationmuch needed at the moment.

  2. Hi Hayley, Glad I am not the only one. It's so hard to get back into it but it feels great when you are. Good luck finding your mojo too. Rachel x

  3. Hi I've just discovered your blog from #IBOT! and I just wanted to tell you that I completely understand about the toilet thing....I overdid it with the squats on one of those stupid wii exercise games and bending to go to the toilet was just the worst!!!

  4. Hi Sportymummy, Yes overdoing the squats will do it! Ouch!

  5. I wish I had a treadmill at home(am impressed you run 12-15km 5 days a week though!)

Body combat is my favourite but my gym now has it at horrible times - trying to motivate myself to get to one.

Day 2 is always the super painful post-exercise day - if i have not been to pump in a while and return day 2 is the one where i walk like a cowboy or old lady with a zimmer frame!

  6. I used to go to Rothwell Genesis. You can (could?) buy unlimited childcare for $10/wk. My kids still ask when I'm going back, they really enjoyed that creche.
    Sorry kids, mummy got old!

  7. I've never been a member of a gym, I just know I would be wasting our money. I always admire people such as yourself. And I love that first pic!

  8. Have you tried a Body Attack class yet? Totally addictive. Although I've recently discovered Body Balance and do that without fail every Sunday afternoon to get me set up for the week. You seem to be very fit!

  9. Hi Deb, it's hard when your favourite classes are at the wrong times. If only they would let us organise the timetables. I love your descriptions - they perfectly described how I was walking.

Blundermum, they stopped the creche deal recently. Annoying, that was the original reason I joined that gym. Great creche fees. Drag your old arse back and we can shake them together.

Thanks Becky, I have often wasted money on gym memberships. Hopefully I won't be wasting it for much longer. Glad you like the photo.

Hi Misha, I love body attack too, but I don't like some of the moves, like hopping sideways, it seems like a great way to injury my uncoordinated self. Balance is great but it's a bad times at my gym..

    Thanks reading and commenting.

  10. Oh, the spin classes are the worst. I can't remember ever being sore after Body combat, probably because I was too busy thinking about how ridiculous I look trying to punch and kick (they really need to lose some of those full-length mirrors at gyms) to actually work very hard.
I have zero inclination to any sort of exercise at the moment. Really thinking that needs to change!

  11. I would love to go to the Gym, but it's not anywhere near affordable at the moment. I love pushing my body though, and I feel like my workout at the moment is too easy.

Hope Thursday is better than anticipated.

  12. Julie, I completely understand. I think I look like Lara Croft kicking and punching until I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and realise I look more like Mr Bean. The mirror is very distracting.

Hi Jess, Gyms are too expensive, The govt should subsidise memberships. The health of the country and all.

  15. Geez Rachel, that's a lot of kms! I do 2 x 5km runs a week outdoors and that's enough for me at the moment. I prefer that to gyms. I am jealous of your tready though.

  16. Hi Lee, Sometimes I think it sounds like a lot and other times I think I should be doing more. I think any moving is good, whatever it is. Thanks for commenting. Rachel

  17. Your post made me feel completely guilty, my poor treadmill is sitting in our games room totally neglected.

I must try your strategy & get back into it!

  18. Michelle, you poor lonely treadmill makes me sad. Treadmills do love company. Even just a gentle stroll makes them happy. :)

Thanks for reading and commenting. Rachel

  19. I've never been a classes person - I used to love going to the gym but I've gotten appallingly out of the habit & I really need to start going back. I love loading a tv show on my iPad and going for a walk/jog in air con comfort :)

Then if I get bored, I can watch people cycling too fast who are nearly falling off their bikes and giggle to myself.

And if all else fails, I stare out of the gym window towards Moreton Island. I love my gym.

Damn, I need to go back there more often!
